Nikon 105mm f/2.8 micro

I picked this baby up last night off a dude from craigslist. It's sweet...nice and sharp...only thing that was shocking was that it doenst display a fixed 2.8 throughout the entire focus range...a good friend of mine sent me a link to a site that explains this Nikon AF deal...here's the link to the article. Essentially the lens communicates to the body the effective aperature size...since when you move in closer you lose light etc. so it's good...dont be shocked...it's still 2.8 and nothing is wrong with your lens...it's just giving your body information that will enable better exposure and metering and yadda...

oh...and the focusing on this thing isnt lightning fast...but it's still good...it hunts a bit but hits the target...

My new Nikon D80

So I bought the D80 this past week...and it rocks!!!

Picked up an extra battery and the MB-D80 battery grip.

On paper the diffs between it and my D50 dont seem to be super super huge...but trust me...when you get your hands on it and use this beauty...you wont understand how you could have lived without it. the 2.5" display alone is 40% of it's greatness...but anyone can make up stats...3% of all people know that...

So I live in the beaches area...or as some would argue needlessly...the BEACH area...whatever...same shit different name...anyways...I met up with 2 of my close friends today for lunch (Bo and Kenrick) and after I went on a street car ride to the west end...well semi west end...to Roncesvalle and Queen West...I always knew there was a beach area down there as well but never ventured down there myself...never thought to do so...so on one of my solo adventures I discovered a whole other place in Toronto...albeit for some it's nothing new or special...it's likely old news for alot of people...but damn...this area is freakin' nice...in my opinion it's much nicer than the 'beaches' area in the east end of the city in many ways...it feels like it's a nice hidden area that few people know about...althought I'm wrong cuz it's the location of the west end boat clubs and such...still...it looks and feels really nice...

If I had a girl to take on a date this would be very cool place to take her...but I don't...this is not by the way a sad way to segway into asking for hookups...I'm not cool with that...sorta...

So yeah...check this area out...it's really freakin' nice...easy to get to...lots of street cars that take you there...the Queen and King street cars will do the trick...or you can drive there via lakeshore or QEW...there's plenty (on a non busy day I'm guessing) of parking...

Tis the season for outdoor festivals!!!!

At Nathan Phillip's Square there's the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Basically from Dundas all the way up to Lawrence on Yonge street there's something goin' on. But really I don't need to tell you that...you probably already know.

Yesterday I was at the TOAE and met a bunch of new people. Three of these people were Sean Galbraith (Toronto Blogger and Photographer), Paul Robert Turner (Exceptional Painter), and Olexander Wlasenko (Stellar Drawer).

So I didnt actually end up spending all that much time at the Jazzfest itself...only really about an hour tops on Sunday Night...still was a great trip though....I was able to see more of the city than I had before...really 3 days and 2 nights is not enough to see that city....even adding up all the times i've been there before just doesnt do it....

I'm going for sure again next year....hopefully with more days...we'll see...

This shot was taken May 27th, 2006 during Doors Open where a bunch of buildings are open in Toronto for photo nerds and history geeks or regular old tourists alike, to take a look at for a few days...

This particular photo was taken at Commerce Court where the CIBC HQ is (or I think back in ye olde day when it was the HQ...I'm not a history Geek). I greyscaled it, added shabby colour to the chair, and the cherry on top and my favorite thing to do to photos lately....a fauxlomo....

this was shot with my Nikon D50 w/ the kit 18-55 lens....should have used the 50mm 1.8 on this...meh...c'est la vie

I've been busy for the last little while...not super busy but enough that I haven't had time to post...so yeah...I guess that's busy...

I just started a new job at SportChek @Eaton Centre...I'm part time so my schedule is inconsistent at this point...but feel free to come in and holla at ya boy...me...

Here's the low-down about the job...it's a commission based job 4.5%...or minimum wage at this point...depends on which is higher...at this point I'm a newbie so my sales havent gone past the point where minimum wage is lower...meh...in truth...and you can tell whoever you want..or is whom??...I don't plan on being there for very long...just long enough to find another job and move on...but that's not to say that I won't do my best for the company in the meantime...no body likes a slacker...

Anyways...if y'allz know someone who's hiring a young "go-getter" give me a shout...

If you're tired of waiting for my 2 cents on cheap eats in Toronto...Then you should probably pick up "CHEAPEATS TORONTO" a guide to...you guessed it...Cheap Eats in Toronto...it's 12 bucks CAD plus dreaded taxes...but think of the savings you'll get from Cheap Eats!!!

Happy Birthday Peter!

I was first introduced to actor Peter Dinklage when my sister recommended the movie 'The Station agent' to me. That is a great movie. It's so full of life and an easy going watch. I followed the characters as if they were old friends...the tone of the film was very nice...I'm not a movie critic nor do I know any of the artistic sides of films and what not...I'm a pretty big schmoe when it comes down to it...I just know what I like...and this movie I loved...

I also came across earlier last year the short lived show 'Threshold'. I only first started to watch it cuz I saw a commercial for the show and saw that Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek TNG...I'm a huge ST geek) was in it...and Carla Gugino. I was happily surprised that Peter was in the show. A fairly different character from Fin in 'The Station Agent'. I was also happily surprised to see that Charles S. Dutton from the 90's TV show 'ROC'.

Anyways...I'm a fan of Peter Dinklage and would like to wish him a happy birthday...and hope that you all check out 'The Station Agent'. By the way I don't own any stock in the movie... :)

New TTC Trains in 2009

The TTC is replacing it's fleet of 30yr old Subway trains.
As a result the new ones coming into service in 2009 will need a new name...and as a result of that.........there's a contest!!!

You can find and up the contest brochure on a TTC vehicle (if the vehicle has it...it'll be on one of those ring deals above the seats against the wall of the train/bus/streetcar)

You can see a mockup of the new train at Davisville Station Starting June 6th to June 20th between 8am-6pm.

I'm gonna go today (thursday june 8th).

That's right folks!!! You heard it here second to last...or last...or last +1...whatever...

In anycase...Yes, the Toronto Transit Commission is on strike.

Union officials say it's about safety for drivers and for the shift changes made to maintence personel.

TTC officials say it's a lockout...

The truth about it all is at this point unknown.

Expect in a few hours to get photos and updates from me, Chu Hefner, your eyes and ears on this situation.

I will be biking down to various locations across the GTA to take a pulse on the goings on during this sudden strike.

Can I say strike anymore times in this post you ask? Fuck yes I can...STRIKE STRIKE STRIKE STRIKE!!!

My friend Colin Pendrith is in a band named "The Jack Kerouac Knapsack Band" or JKKB for short.

They had a show atO'Grady's Tap & Grill. Photos of the band and of the night can be found on my flickr page.

It was a good turn out and (all bias aside) they were the only good band to play all night. Sorry "other" bands...

The band consists of Daniel Quinlan (Vocals/Guitar), Colin Pendrith (Guitar), Jamie Cousin (Bass), Connor Thompson (Drums), and Alex Bonebakker (Keyboard).

So I tried to put up an article on Wikipedia about Dangerous Dan's Diner...and I should note before going on that I don't own any portion of Dangerous Dan's...nor does the owner or employees know me or vice versa...I just like the place and know that it's pretty well known...anyways...I was denied...

The PTB over at wiki promptly flagged my article as a 'notability/promotion' thing and had it put up for speedy deletion/removal...

I'm a bit bitter about this...but as the cliché goes...c'est la vie...

What I found funny/annoying is that it was flagged almost instantly...and checking into the person that flagged me found that this dude is fairly active in the screening of wiki pages and what not...but come on...I barely had it up and you flagged it?? I mean I'm glued to my computer...but this is a bit much yes?

Anyways...Again...yes I am bitter...and I'm sorry to 'Quick draw McGraw' (not actually his name) who flagged my page if I come across as bashing him for being the ever vigilant watcher over all that is Wiki...and I'm not in anyway bad mouthing Wiki either...I praise it for everything that it is and does...I'm just mystified by its quick action...but I guess they get alot of people positng things to advertise and what not...

A must try (and continue to patron) has got to be Dangerous Dan's Diner...

If you've ever taken the street car along queen east to or from downtown you'll have noticed the Double D. It's right across from arguably the seediest strip club in all of Toronto, Jilly's. For me it was one of those things where riding by it a million times and thinking to myself "I wonder how that place is...?" finally got to me. On my millionth and one-th (?) time I decided to go in. Well really I was downtown and had nothing better to do so me and one of my oldest (longest known) and best friends Em decided 'hey what the fuck!!!' lets do it!!! A short street car ride later...we each had:

The Coronary Burger Special
2 8oz Patties, 4 Slices of Bacon, 2 Slices of Cheddar and a Fried Egg on top. Served w/ Poutine and a Can of Pop ($13.45+tax)

This is a fuckin' treat and a half.
If you're looking to cram your gullet with a mouth full of beef (there's got to be a better way to say that...) that's molested with a mountain of toppings that includes a fried unfertilized embryo of a domesticated foul, then this is the hippy wounding burger for you...It's a pretty big price tag...but if you're out for a feast that'll fill you for the rest of the day...then there you have it...

We didnt get the Royale...which basically means you get a bit more which includes a deep fried mars bar...It doesnt mater...it's still a freakin' huge meal. But this isnt even the largest friggin thing they got...

If you're not satisfied by the Coronary, and you want to KILL a hippie instead of wound them...then try their freakin'...

What's listed so far are their retarded huge meals for gluttons and those who eat because they're angry...or angry because they eat such retarded huge meals...in any scenario or a combo there of...

If you're into a 'regular' sized meal...you can try their (in relative terms) pussy sized burgers if that's what you're looking for...at only a single 8oz patty and ranging from $4.29 for a basic plain burger to $5.49 for a burger with a bit more...you're eating in the shadow of greatness but still kills 99% of all other burger joints in Toronto...PLUS is still garaunteed to make a hippie at the very least sick...

Some details for those who might give a shit...

Double D's interior isnt exactly designed to please any fancy pants people...
Their seats consist of old minivan bench seats and classic greasy spoon paint...which is for those of you who dont know...basically a white primer that has been painted over with years of particlized grilled and fried oils from the delicious and life shortening food that's served up...But what place isnt really?

My Weekend...

So this weekend I ended up doing a few things...The highlight of the weekend was a trip down to Buffalo and Niagra Falls...

So I went down with my close friends Bo, Ray and Kenrick. The goal was to find some good deals what with the dollar being so low and the tax rate in buffalo being 5%. So right now the conversion (including the tax) is about 20%...which isnt bad considering there were some good things available...but I only bought a new pair of shoes...Reeboks...they replaced my 4 year old Adidas...which I miss greatly...they served me well...I feel like a traitor...

Anyways...we hit up two malls...I forget the names of them cuz I wasnt driving and also didnt care...I only got some shoes and my friends got a few things but not alot...it was a nice trip anyways...

We got back to our side of the border i think between 7 & 8...once we got there we hit up Fallsview Casino and headed straight for the buffet...it was about an hour and a half wait...but worth it cuz the food there was pretty good...Oysters on the half shell and shrimp...a Glutton's wet dream...The meal came to $26.40 CAD w/taxes (you pay when you enter the buffet) but you get 2 bucks off if you get a players card...which is not a big deal...but you must give the casino marketing info about yourself...not a big deal again if you dont care...

After dinner we walked around and watched the tables...they were pretty steep $25 minimums...blarg...my friends and I ended up playing the slots for a bit...Mostly video poker (Jacks or better)...My friends did pretty well on these...broke even or won 5 bucks...which is pretty good considering slots are money eaters...not that everything else in the casino is any better...

I dropped 30 on the slots...yes...I suck and I know better than to play slots...even if it was video poker...

Eventually we found a $15min Blackjack table...I made 127.50 in about a half hour...I figured I pressed my luck enough for one day and walked away 97.50 richer (cuz of the $30 loss at stupid slots...) not bad...not GREAT...but not bad...basically it meant that I broke even/spent nothing all day...The Casino payed for my day out...shoes, food, gas money...pretty sweet if you ask me...

What I'm most proud of was that I walked away when I did...yes there's the regret that I could have made more...but that doesnt matter...I can lose that money another day at the casino :D

I miss my old shoes...they carried me far and wide...

Last night a bunch of us went out to celebrate the 24 years of Andre Tiemann's life...

A bunch of pictures (59 to be exact) are up on my flickr site...

We started the night off at Tman's house...first in his basement, then the living room. Paul, Myself, Kwan and Patten all gathered here (in that order). I didnt predrink at Tman's house...instead I had diet caffine free coke...thanks Tman!!! Surprisingly it was good...everyone else had various tall boys of beer bought from the local LCBO

Next...Murphy's Law!!! We drank upstairs at the second floor bar...good stuff...
We started with a round of Irish Car-Bombs...which this time Consisted of a half pint of Guiness with a shot of whiskey dropped into it...I've always had it as a shot of Baileys in place of the whiskey...whatever...still good...and more potent i'm sure...

After this the arrival of Paulo, Melissa, Graham and Rob...I think in that order...but dont quote me.

Melissa buys Tman a birthday Shot of Tequilla...no salt or lemon...but it was instead chased with a shot of Pineapple Juice...Mel and Tman said it was good...

Later at Murphy's Law a guy named Damian (sp?) told us a story of how he worked in a resort in Mexico where he developed a drink called a "Turbo"...

A "Turbo" is a shot that consists 1/3 Amaretto 2/3 Tequilla...no salt or lemon...just shoot and drink...

We told Damian about it being Tman's Bday...and we kinda goated him into buying Tman a shot of Turbo...Damian did so with a smile on his face and took a shot with him...Good guy that Damian Character...

So drinking ensues until 12 o'clock or so (we arrived at 1030 or so)...

We eventually leave just after midnight and head over to the smaller bar...Captain Jack's....

"Jack's" has cheap beer and free Foozeball (Jits)...great combo...
Nothing eventful really happend...a few more drinks...and a game or two of Jits...

And that was pretty much the night....

So yeah....

I was downtown wandering again...and came across this....a Starbucks in Downtown Toronto Chinatown...I wonder how it's going to do....

There once was a McDonalds in chinatown...which is now a Tim Hortons...Timmy's has been there for a while now...so perhaps Starbucks could catch on as well....

They gave out free samples...some kinda choco-coffee....dunno what they call it...maybe the extra vente half caf of evil...i dunno...

If you're interested in this Starbucks...it's on Dundas East of Spadina basically right by Beverly Street.

I dont drink coffee much at all...maybe like 3-5 cups a year...and it's mostly cuz of peer pressure...it's a gateway drug...what can i say...

I aim to find the places that can fill all the best clichés there can be about food...

The majority of the ones posted today are Photos of Graffiti that can be found in a back Alley that runs parallel to Queen St. West between Bathurst St. and Spadina Ave. in Downtown Toronto.

The photo at the top is actually part of one giant wall mural. I cut the mural down to 3 segments which focus on the character in each one. I appologize to the original painter/artist for cutting up his/her work.

Ryerson MAXEX

Tonight (Technically last night...check the post time) I went to my buddy Alex Webster's photo show down at Ryerson University. His photos were a part of Ryerson's MAXEX (aka Maximum Exposure) show for Photography Students. The show is located at the School of Image Arts @Ryerson University. If you want to go it's open from noon-9pm from now till Sunday (Tomorrow it's 10am-9pm).

His photos on display were inspired by a painter who's name escapes me right now...I'll add it back on when I remember later...but the painter would have a similar theme using objects to complete a form like his work shown above.

In order starting from top left to bottom; Hearing, Taste and Vision. Hearing is my Favourite one of the three...it seems most lifelike to me in that it looks like a person wearing a mask rather than a face composed of various images.

Tonight was my second every visit to a real photo show. My first was another of Alex's (possibly his first) downtown on Adelaide...I think it was for 'Contact'...not sure...I'll get back to you on that one...

Anyways, tonight was filled with alot of great work.

The first thing that I thought caught my eye was a series of photos called "EAT ME"...It consisted of photos of individuals lying on those styrofoam trays that you'd find in a supermarket holding ground beef or any meat for that matter...nude but completely bald/hairless and with any of the 'nude bits' as absent...meaning that nipples and genitals were 'painted' or edited over such that they were absent...did that make any sense?? Whatever...go see it...tis interesting...

I regret not having taken one of the Artist's business cards which were quite cool....they were the photos on display but printed directly onto a styrofoam tray and then covered in cellophane...as if packaged meat...I regret not taking one...and once again my memory has failed me...I think it was Sammy Rawal...But I'll go back Sunday when I'm in the area playing pool and check it out again...Hopefully I'll have found/remembered the missing info in this post

I picked up a few business cards from other Artists who were also on display. In alphabetical order by last name:
Brandon Allen
Michelle Darwin
Larissa Issler
Emily Silverman (The business card I took didn't have a website...but here's her email)
Cameron Smith
Lizzie Vickery

Out of these six I especially enjoyed the work by Brandon Allen, Cameron Smith (the smaller photos that had backlit light source) and Lizzie Vickery.

Other noteable Artists who either ran out of cards or didnt have one at all but I thought I should mention anyways are:

J0yce Mosby (email)
Maya Visnyei (email)
Jennifer Wolfraim (email)

They might have websites...another thing for me to look into...

All the Artists that I have mentioned (Including my buddy Alex), I mention them because I really liked the asthetics of the photos...shadows, colours etc. I admit that whatever deep meaning or symbolism that some if not all of these artists were trying to make was completely wasted on me. If I was given time to really reflect on each and everyone of these works maybe I could come up with something but I doubt I would understand or even be able to guess as to what they were getting at...I appologize to them for me (or my?) just not getting 'it'...

My good buddy Andre Tiemann ('Tman') recently did a volunteer voyage to Grenada (Carriacou) with Youth Challenge International(YCI) group. This shot was taken by his group partner Linda.

I love the colours and the setup of this photo. In my humble opinion it belongs in a magazine.

This is posted up on Tman's Flickr site along with other photos from his trip.

I think he should blog his ass off about his trip.

This is where I'll blah blah blog about the photos that I put up on my Flickr site.

So far this is the one to recieve the most comments from friends.

Taken on Thursday March 30th, 2006 @ Avenue Road & Yorkville

I was crouched outside of a restaurant at the south east corner, where a bunch of very nicely dressed, presumably business persons were dinning or having cocktails...whatever...anyways...yeah....took me a while to get anyone crossing the road...people were avoiding my camera...either cuz they're being polite...or were afraid I was stealing their souls...
The older woman crossing the road had been waiting to cross for sometime and I have another shot of her watching me waiting for a shot...I think she either gave up and crossed...or understood what I was waiting for...in any case...

Shot on my Minolta Maxxum Htsi Plus w/28-55mm lens on aperature priority @9.5 processed at Loblaws then scanned into my computer with my semi broken Epson Stylus CX4600 (it wont print) into photoshop to switch into greyscale...cropped slightly cuz of slight tilt due to scan.

And there you have it for now...

I realize this is basically a rehashing of what I already wrote as a comment on the flickr page...but I figured it basically sums it up.
